Music in your glass

Having a disability means that you are not “typical”, that you don’t fit into what is considered “the norm”. It doesn’t mean that you are any less of a person, just different. I know whereof I speak, as my youngest has Down Syndrome and she has the vibrance, energy and creativity just like all the other kids her age but she doesn’t learn at the same pace or in the same way as many of the kids in her age group. I’m not talking strictly about academics, I’m also speaking about social skills. She is 7 years old and she is still learning about waiting her turn, how to play cooperatively with her friends and about being a part of a group.

A key ingredient in her social development has been the work of Johanne Brodeur and the Music Therapy program at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Music Therapy teaches kids like Chloe about taking turns, about playing in a group, about self expression, about focus and about following instructions. The bonus has been that she is wonderfully musical and can play on a piano for hours. Since she has been a part of Music Therapy, her friendships at school are stronger. At recess or lunch she can be found playing happily with the other kids and taking turns to go down the slide. One more bonus... she seems to be learning faster. She is still behind the other kids but she is picking up new concepts faster.

We access this program through the Greater Victoria Down Syndrome Society, which gets the majority of its funding through private donations. Despite a generous grant this year from Variety the Children’s Charity, they are still in need of funds to continue this fantastic program. As one of the families with a vested interest in its continuation, we have developed a fundraiser in our stores with our partners at Jackson-Triggs.

Simply put, from now through Christmas, you save $1.00 off the price of both the Jackson-Triggs ‘Black Label’ Merlot and Chardonnay. Plus when you purchase a bottle of either, you trigger a $1/bottle donation to the Music Therapy program and in so doing, offer kids with Down Syndrome a brighter future.

By the way, the wines are pretty darn good too and rank quite high on the Bang for the Buck scale. The Merlot is dark and rich and filled with aromas and flavours of plum and berry compote. If you let it linger on your palate for a moment you will be rewarded with subtle flavours of vanilla and fresh ground dark roasted coffee ($14.99 SCORE: 7.6/$1).

As for the Chardonnay, it is a burst of sunshine and tree fruit. Serve it just chilled to bring out the generous flavours of pear, apple and even pineapple. The wine has been kissed by neutral oak, which softens any hard acidic edges. I had this recently with crab, prawns and scallops and it was divine ($13.99 SCORE: 7.45/$1).

I hope that you will enjoy the wines and know that with every sip you are creating beautiful music today and down the road.

VinoHospice: Selected for its character, to raise money for Victoria Hospice

This project was inspired by my Uncle, David McMillan, and his work with Victoria Hospice. As the past Chair David told me about the great work that Victoria Hospice does for our community and their constant need for financial support from the community. Unfortunately this past summer David passed in Hospice after a long battle with cancer and I got to see first hand the incredible work that Victoria Hospice does everyday. This wine, now known as VinoHospice, was selected from hundreds to honour the work of Victoria Hospice and the man that was my Uncle.

Our goal is to raise over $6,000 for Victoria Hospice from the sale of this wine. $1 from every bottle sold and $24 from every case lot purchase will be donated to Victoria Hospice – Rod Phillips, Buyer- Liquor Plus
